‘Another Book’ was Les Coleman’s final book. It was printed at the end of 2012 in a small digital edition of fifty copies, and only a few were ever circulated. This new version replicates the original but in Uniformbooks’ taller format.

“What to make of this—secret bibliography, quizzical spotter’s guide, collection of poems, twentieth-century type sampler… A picture book—not merely as a series of visual compositions but because only its own paratexts are truly textual—the contents are illustrations, absorbing, not discursive. An art of reading is evoked; the hint of the unprinted pages. Not another book—at this stage, it’s not the same… Not just another book: another book book. L’histoire de l’édition epitomised as lists of editions, found in colophons, all the other data about who, what and where effaced. Drawing attention to how books are rarely and briefly novel or singular: most books are another—edition, impression, reprint or translation; and in their intervals, the history they entered re-edits them.”
—Elizabeth James, National Art Library

“…it is a public service to make this available in a trade edition.”
—David Bellingham

‘1966-1967’

Edited by Les Coleman and Colin Sackett

We decided to put together a quick publication. Les had a pile of Practical Woodworking magazines, a complete run of two years. From each issue we tried to select just one of the many half-tones of wooden objects, if we couldn’t choose we went on to the next. The twenty-four issues are listed one per page—“January 1966” etc.—and the eleven images the only content.

An illustrated review of Les Coleman’s exhibition at Coracle Press, 1–28 February 1978.

Les Coleman: ‘February’

John Bevis

Les Coleman (1945–2013) was an artist, writer, lecturer, publisher, and collector. For forty years he exhibited widely, installing one-man shows and taking part in group exhibitions, while producing books and cards under the imprint In House Publishing which he shared with his collaborator Charlie Holmes. He reviewed and wrote about a wide-range of graphic subjects, as well as publishing collections of aphorisms and drawings.
